French Herborist Tradition

Tradition herboriste française · Herboristerie in France

France’s long plant-remedy tradition, interrupted legally when the state herbalist diploma was abolished in 1941.

French herboristerie grew from a recognised tradition of preparing and selling medicinal plants. A Vichy-era law abolished the state herbalist certificate on 11 September 1941; existing qualified herbalists could continue, but no replacement diploma was created, leaving modern shops to operate within a narrower legal framework.
